Here is what found to be most discouraging and challenging at the time of starting with affiliate marketing:
1.       Doubt I can do it well. Here was the major concern. Ok I know people who make great income from affiliate marketing BUT they are pros and for years involved in web design. Here is where hand-holding manuals come handy. At this stage the technical guidance is a greater encouragement i.e. the promise of making the next step, than the promise of thousands of dollars streaming to the account i.e. the destination of all the steps.

2.       It’s a bit embarrassing. If you are not a born marketer you might find pitching, selling, shouting how great your products are not very much of your favorite thing.  Especially that you are selling a product for which you can’t 100% guarantee it is going to work for everyone as promised. Here are two approaches. One – my activity is a part of my identity. When you feel personal responsibility for what you are selling and can’t do it well unless you identify yourself with such a product. If this is the concern the key to this is to choose a product you really like and would not be shy to talk about to your friends. I’m this kind of person. And when choosing products to market I went for one of spam blockers. It was a product I used and was confident to recommend to others.  Two – it’s just money. If you do not have a problem to detach yourself from the pitched product you can do great with any product which will make you most money. Even if it something that you would not wish to add to your cv.  

3.       Unsure if it’s working or not. I did not know tangible ways to assess if what I do is working or not.  The Google analytics show no visitors even 2 weeks after I started building backlinks – is it too early? Or just I did something wrong? The lack of confidence and knowledge of the whole process are very discouraging at that stage. Also since it takes some time for the whole process to kick off impatience can take over and be a great demotivator.  

4.       No web savvy. If someone is new to the web business the lack of confidence and amount of new terminology and processes involved in making money online can be overwhelming. Also the amount of mistakes slows down the process. The number of times when you say ‘I really don’t know what to do know’ is frustrating.     

5.       Heavy competition. Once you start browsing the net for relevant resources regarding affiliate marketing it seems – wow! EVERYONE is doing it. Indeed there are many marketers. Still most of internet population will never even try it so there is still space!

The point is not to get discouraged and have patience to go through the learning process.
